As winter fades and spring dogwoods get ready to bloom, Jackson County reveals itself anew - a gentle unfurling of vibrant greens across its eight mountain towns nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Equally inviting is the community’s approachable spirit, where days feel unhurried and enriching experiences are within reach, no matter your budget. With limitless outdoor activities to try, affordable dining, scenic drives and charming small towns to explore, this season is one of the best times to plan a budget-friendly getaway in western North Carolina.

Hit the Trails

Jackson County is home to some of the best hiking in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains region, and spring is one of the most magical (and cost-effective) times to get outside. Waterfalls run full of snowmelt and rain, wildflowers color the forest floor and temperatures hover in that sweet spot for comfortable hiking.

Popular must-sees include Whitewater Falls, the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies, where a short, paved path leads to sweeping views – you will only need $3 for parking (credit card only). For an easy waterfall hike close to town, Silver Run Falls near Cashiers makes a scenic picnic stop, with a shallow pool perfect for wading once temperatures rise.

If you’re looking for a longer adventure, hike the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Richland Balsamthat stands at 6,053 ft. While it’s a lofty hike, it’s surprisingly easy to trek and is only a 1.5-mile loop. The hike winds through a spruce-fir forest and offers a cool reprieve from the heat in warmer months. Or head to Pinnacle Park Trail in Sylva, where the longer seven-mile hike rewards you with sweeping views of the Plott Balsam Mountains.

Want something even more budget-friendly? Simply lace up your walking shoes and explore The Village Green in Cashiers or the Jackson County Greenway in Sylva, home to the first all accessible forest therapy trail in the United States.
