Fall is here, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway are open and ready to welcome visitors. Along with U.S. Forest Service sites such as Whiteside Mountain and Whitewater Falls, our mountains remain fully accessible for scenic drives, hikes, and unforgettable leaf-peeping adventures.

While some services like restrooms, visitor centers, and staffed facilities may be closed or limited, the scenic drives, hiking trails, overlooks, and waterfalls that make fall in the North Carolina mountains unforgettable are fully accessible. In other words, your trip will look and feel much like it always has during peak fall foliage season.

What Visitors Should Expect

🍂 Unforgettable Fall Color!

  • We have one of the longest leaf seasons in the country due to our wide-ranging elevation—from 2,000 to 6,000 feet—with the season spanning from early October to mid-November.

 Open and Accessible

  • The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is fully open with no closures thanks to a funding agreement with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, partners in Tennessee, and Smokies Life.

  • Roads, overlooks, trails, waterfalls, and open-air areas remain open across the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and U.S. Forest Service lands.
  • Iconic drives and hikes like the Parkway’s scenic pull-offs and Whiteside Mountain’s panoramic summit are available as usual.

⚠️ Limited Service

  • Some restrooms, visitor centers, and trash services may be unavailable during the government shutdown along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but restaurants, lodging, shops, and attractions across Jackson County remain open and ready to welcome fall travelers.

Fall Color Season: The Tradition Continues

Jackson County’s mountains are about to put on their most colorful show of the year. With crisp air, fiery foliage, and endless ways to enjoy the outdoors, autumn here remains as magical as ever.

Reassurance for Travelers

Even with the government shutdown, your fall getaway will feel familiar. You’ll still be able to drive the Parkway, hike mountain trails, and take in sweeping views of the Smokies. With a little extra preparation — packing snacks, carrying out your trash, and relying on local updates — you can enjoy a safe, stress-free trip.

This blog will be kept up to date if anything changes, but for now, the message is simple: the parks are open, the leaves are turning, and fall is waiting for you. 🍂
