Spend summer the way it’s meant to be spent relaxing on the water at Lake Glenville, NC. As one of the highest-elevation lakes east of the Mississippi, Lake Glenville delivers a refreshingly cool escape from summer heat.

Visitors can enjoy crystal-clear water and mountain views while searching for hidden waterfalls, swimming, relaxing on the beach or exploring quiet coves by kayaking. Whether you prefer fishing, water sports or reading a book on a sandy beach, Lake Glenville provides the perfect backdrop for a refreshing day (or weekend) at the lake.

Boating on Lake Glenville

All motorized boats, pontoons, ski boats, sailboats, kayaks and canoes are welcome on Lake Glenville. Boaters can explore 26 miles of shoreline on a watercraft of their choosing. Bring your own or rent a boat at one of Lake Glenville’s marinas, including Signal Ridge Marina or Lakeshore Marina.

Whether you’re exploring the lake on a pontoon boat, kayak or paddleboard, you’ll find quiet spots, hidden waterfalls, and plenty of space to unwind.

For a truly spectacular experience, book a scenic waterfall cruise with Lake Glenville Scenic Waterfall Cruises. Sit back and relax on a 28-ft luxury pontoon yacht while a Licensed Sea Captain shows you the hidden waterfalls of Lake Glenville. Since most of these waterfalls are only visible from the water, this cruise is one of the best ways to be sure you find them all.

Lake Glenville is a beautiful, but narrow, lake, so make sure to keep your wake small when entering coves and passing kayakers or paddleboarders. Stay on the right when passing head-on and always give space to non-motorized boats. A little consideration goes a long way in making sure all boaters on the lake have a peaceful experience.

Water Sports & Adventure

When it comes to water sports, Lake Glenville is a great lake for adventurers of all experience levels. Thanks to the quiet coves and slower pace, it's ideal for tubing, paddleboarding and kayaking.

If you're a beginner and don't have your own equipment, Signal Ridge Marina rents pontoon boats, tubes, paddleboards, skis, wakeboards and kneeboards. The calm areas of Lake Glenville are a great place to dip your toe in the water, literally and figuratively!

For those with a little more experience, trade the quiet coves for the open water and pick up speed with waterskiing, wakeboarding or tubing. Lake Glenville is just as fun for thrill-seekers as it is for beginners.

Swimming at Lake Glenville

Swimmers will delight in the clear water at the beach at the Pines Recreation Area on the north end of Lake Glenville. Even in the height of summer, the lake stays cooler than other Southeastern lakes due to its 3,500-foot elevation, making it the perfect place to cool down during the midday heat.

This sandy beach offers access to the water with a roped-off area where you can enjoy swimming without worrying about riptides, sharks or jellyfish! The Pines Recreation Area also includes a pier, several picnic tables, public restrooms, and is handicapped accessible.

Be sure to stay within the designated swimming area at the beach to avoid boat traffic and take advantage of the life jacket loaner board, where swimmers can borrow a life jacket for free and return it when done.

Fishing on Lake Glenville

Anglers will find that Lake Glenville is a hidden gem when it comes to the diversity of fish in its clear waters. The lake’s depth (up to 125 feet) and clarity make it especially appealing for discerning anglers, offering cooler waters, better visibility and a variety of fishing conditions throughout the day. It’s a popular fishing spot for walleye, pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, trout and perch.

Anyone 16 years of age or older must possess a valid North Carolina fishing license when fishing in public waters.

Picnicking & Lakeside Relaxation

The primary area for picnicking at Lake Glenville is at the Pines Recreation Area, where visitors can find shaded picnic tables that are available on a first-come, first-served basis (pets are not permitted). Picknickers can enjoy the incredible mountain views, take a walk out on the pier or relax on the sandy beach.

Boaters looking to refuel and relax can pull off at Signal Ridge Marina to stock up on snacks and supplies or anchor near one of the four waterfalls that are only accessible by boat. Those on watercraft can also choose to stop off at one of the islands in Lake Glenville to enjoy a picnic and watch for bald eagles.

Whether you choose to relax on the water or beside the water, you can be sure the peaceful mountain views will make it easy to unwind.

Hiking & Hidden Waterfalls

For those who are willing to go off the beaten path, hidden waterfalls will be your reward. Lake Glenville is home to four majestic waterfalls that are only accessible by boat.

Hurricane Falls is the most popular waterfall to view on the lake and is best viewed by boat or kayak. Mill Creek Falls and Norton Falls are two more waterfalls that pour into Lake Glenville with quiet beauty. Hidden Falls is a smaller waterfall, literally hidden around a curve inside a cove.

Gliding across the calm water in a boat or kayak, listening to these gorgeous hidden waterfalls, is the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day.

Not far from Lake Glenville is High Falls. In fact, you can access one of the two trailheads from the parking lot of the Pines Recreation Area. High Falls is over 100 feet tall, and the hike from the South Trail Head involves several descending steps down to the base of the waterfall.
