Easter on The Green

The Village Green 160 Frank Allen Road, Cashiers, NC, United States

In Cashiers, NC, Easter Weekend is filled with events that celebrate the joy and hope of this spring holiday. The weekend will feature a devotional experience with Cashiers Area Churches, an Easter Egg Hunt and an outdoor Easter Sunrise Service hosted by Cashiers Area Churches as the sun emerges over the mountains. All events are free and open to the community. Cashiers 2024 Easter Weekend Schedule: Fri., March 29 | Stations of The Cross, 4 p.m. | The Village Green Commons  Sat., March 30 | Easter Egg Hunt, 11 a.m. | The Village Green Gazebo and Playground Lawn The Easter Egg Hunt is free and open to children ages 11 and younger. Please bring your own Easter baskets! The egg hunt will be divided by age groups. Gazebo Lawn: Ages 9-11 Playground Lawn: Ages 5-8 Inside Playground: Ages 4 and Under Sun., March 31 | Easter Sunrise Service, 7 a.m. | The Village Green Commons Lawn Please bring your own lawn chair to the service.

Discover Jackson County's diverse community of farmers, entrepreneurs, crafters, artists, musicians and local residents at the Jackson County Farmers Market! Join the fun every Saturday in Sylva's Bridge Park parking lot. The Jackson County Farmers Market takes place as follows: Winter Market Hours (Nov. through March), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Spring Through Fall (April through Oct.), 9 a.m. to Noon.  

The Easter Hat Parade

Dillsboro 1 Front Street, Dillsboro, NC, United States

Led by a fleet of restored antique cars, followed by the many hat contestants and featuring the Easter Bunny, the parade begins in front of the Town Hall on Front Street. Get your face painted! Make a hat and come join the parade! Last-minute entrants very welcome. Awards are announced after the Parade. Ribbons are given for the Prettiest, Funniest, Largest, Smallest, Most Unusual, Most Easter-like, Best Smelling, Cutest, Most Outrageous, Best In Show and "Poofiest" hats among other unusual categories. There is even a ribbon awarded to the Best Animal in Show! Fashion your own hat, 10 am - 1:30 pm at Dogwood Crafters on Webster Street. Easter egg hunts (by age group) also start there beginning at noon. Registration for the parade starts at 11 am, with parade at 2 pm.

Catamount Climb Half Marathon & 5K

Western Carolina University 1 University Way, Cullowhee, NC, United States

The 2023 Catamount Climb Half Marathon and 5K will be hosted on the campus of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC on Saturday April 6th, 2024. The 5K course is completely on campus and navigates through the heart of campus with moderate elevation change. The half marathon course starts on campus, and then heads off campus for a few miles before returning back to campus for the finish line. The Catamount Climb Half Marathon and 5K (formerly known as Valley of the Lilies) is hosted by the Western Carolina University School of Health Sciences and the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness. All race proceeds go to support student professional development and travel, and academic scholarships.

Partial Solar Eclipse

On April 8, 2024, Jackson County, NC will experience a partial solar eclipse! Approximately 85% of the sun will be obscured in the area, with the maximum point happening at 3:08 p.m. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. The solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States and Canada. Make your lodging reservations and get ready to experience this celestial phenomenon in the NC Mountains! Solar Eclipse Safety: During an eclipse, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.

As the dam releases whitewater into the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, witness a transformation of the serene High Falls into a formidable force, creating class IV rapids over a 5.5-mile stretch. This rare event is a must-see for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. 2024 Release Dates: April 27-28 June 8 July 6 & 27 August 10 & 24 The event is recommended for experienced boaters only due to the challenging nature of the rapids and the high flows. Duke Energy releases these flows to comply with license requirements and neither encourages nor discourages recreational use of high flows by the public. Visitors are advised to stay out of the water and enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance.

Airing of the Quilts

Appalachian Women's Museum 100 W. Hometown Place, Dillsboro, NC, United States

Airing of the quilts is a mountain tradition where women would take family quilts off the beds and hang them in the spring sunshine to freshen. Enjoy the beautiful display of quilts from quilters and quilt collectors. There will also be the popular fabric scrap exchange, a quilt pattern and book exchange, raffle and music.

These mountains are known as much for the music that comes out of them as they are for their picturesque vistas, cascading waterfalls and alluring trails. Some of the world’s finest musicians have come from Western North Carolina and that rich tradition carries on today. Here in Jackson County, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva every Friday from 7-9 p.m., typically from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The 15th annual season will start on Friday, May 31 (Memorial Day weekend) and end on Friday, Aug. 30 (Labor Day weekend). That will be 15 Fridays of Concerts on the Creek, with the Fireworks Festivities and concert on Tuesday, July 4 sprinkled in for good measure. Summertime Mountain Artisans Arts & Crafts Show

The Mountain Artisans shows are famous for featuring just the biggest selection of authentic handcrafted art and craft in this area, with dozens of artisans participating in this annual event. There is a wide selection of heritage craft. Several of the old time quilters still make them one at a time just for you. Goat milk soap, pine needle baskets, white oak baskets, hand tied brooms and cotton woven rugs are hard to find and all here. Some of the most skilled doll craft, leather craft, and master jewelers around exhibit with us. Many of the gourd artists have won awards in competitions. You will understand why everyone who attends the shows just says, "Wow" when they attend and plans to come back next year!

Fireworks Extravaganza On the Green

The Village Green’s annual Fireworks Extravaganza will take place rain or shine on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024 on The Village Green Common’s Lawn! The evening will feature an incredible band, followed by an extraordinary fireworks show featuring thousands of colorful bursts. Admission is free, however, donations will be collected to help offset the cost of the event. Attendees are welcome to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics and coolers. The Village Green believes it is important to preserve this patriotic tradition for the Cashiers community! This event is one you don’t want to miss!

The town's annual July 4 Fireworks in Sylva should begin at dark (generally around 9:45 p.m.) and are visible from various locations throughout downtown Sylva and the immediate surrounding areas. Presented by the Friends of Lake Glenville This event is in celebration of our nation’s birthday. This tradition started more than 20 years ago, when Stuart Hall and friends produced a remarkable show, with a very small budget, from a barge near Buck Knob Island. The show will again be based at The Point at Glenville Lake subdivision across the lake from Hattler Realty on Highway 107 N. There is always a large audience on boats that enjoy the fireworks from the water. The Friends of Lake Glenville is responsible for the organization and financing of this signature event and rely exclusively on private contributions. The show is scheduled to commence at dusk.

Cashiers Plein Air Festival

Nationally acclaimed painters from throughout the country set up their easels to capture the beauty of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau landscape and quaint mountain lifestyle. This type of outdoor location painting is known as en plein air, French for open air. The Cashiers Plein Air Festival is a biennial event held to raise funds to enhance The Village Green. During this week-long event, artists set up their easels in and around Cashiers to create original art depicting the area. These unique paintings are displayed for viewing and sale at The Village Green Commons. Other highlights include a special patron party, the Palette to Palate Affair, as well as live demonstrations by the artists. The Cashiers Plein Air Festival will take place July 15-20, 2024. This year, gear up for a spectacular display of nature's power and engineering prowess with the High Falls Dam Release at Lake Glenville. As the dam releases whitewater into the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, witness a transformation of the serene High Falls into a formidable force, creating class IV rapids over a 5.5-mile stretch. This rare event is a must-see for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. 2024 Release Dates: April 27-28 June 8 July 6 & 27 August 10 & 24 The event is recommended for experienced boaters only due to the challenging nature of the rapids and the high flows. Duke Energy releases these flows to comply with license requirements and neither encourages nor discourages recreational use of high flows by the public. Visitors are advised to stay out of the water and enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance.

Music fills the air in The Village Green no matter the season. Groovin’ on The Green remains a vibrant, FREE summer concert series, creating unforgettable music experiences for the community! Groovin’ on The Green concerts will begin at 6:00pm, RAIN OR SHINE, held on The Village Green Common’s Lawn. Please bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. Picnics and coolers are welcome! Dogs are welcome as long as they are leashed and with their owners at all times. Food and beverage vendors will be on-site during each concert! The Village Green will continue offering the opportunity for a group to “Rent a Tent”. The Village Green will be providing fifteen 10×10 tents at $100 per tent, per concert. Tent reservation links will be open in early 2024, and are first come, first serve. These mountains are known as much for the music that comes out of them as they are for their picturesque vistas, cascading waterfalls and alluring trails. Some of the world’s finest musicians have come from Western North Carolina and that rich tradition carries on today. Here in Jackson County, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva every Friday from 7-9 p.m., typically from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The 15th annual season will start on Friday, May 31 (Memorial Day weekend) and end on Friday, Aug. 30 (Labor Day weekend). That will be 15 Fridays of Concerts on the Creek, with the Fireworks Festivities and concert on Tuesday, July 4 sprinkled in for good measure.
