Outhouse Races

02.16.2019 @ 11:00 am3:00 pm
Sapphire Valley Resort, 127 Cherokee Trail
Sapphire, NC 28774 United States
+ Google Map

Join us for the exciting Outhouse Races, taking place on February 16, 2019 from 11am-3pm in Sapphire. Crazy? Maybe. Dangerous? Perhaps. Fun? Without a doubt! You won't find Outhouse Races on Snow anywhere else in North Carolina! Dozens of outhouses race to compete for the throne. Spectators come from throughout the southeast to line the course and cheer on those brave enough to see if the outhouse crashes and burns or sails across the finish line. The Outhouse Races have been named a 'Top 20' event in the Southeast for February by Southeast Tourism Society. WHAT ARE OUTHOUSE RACES? Your Homemade Outhouses can be made of wood, cardboard, plastic, or any other homemade items. There are three people to a team and outhouses are secured on a set of skis, which can be provided to you by the Sapphire Valley Ski Area. These skis are pushed by two team members, while one team member 'sits' inside. Outhouses are equipped with a seat with at least one (1) hole, and a roll of toilet paper, or alternative wiping source. The race course is a two-lane track on packed snow (or on ice), with two teams racing each other head to head over a length of approximately 120 feet (40 yards), the first 30 feet being propelled by the pushers and the last 90 feet under its own gravitational power. This event is as exciting as 'Drag Racing' if you use your imagination. Outhouses can be very simple, or as elaborate as anyone…

There is always a large audience on boats that enjoy the fireworks from the water. The Great Balsam Bike Relay

08.10.2019 @ 8:00 am7:00 pm
Motion Makers Bicycle Shop, 36 Allen St
Sylva, NC 28779 United States
+ Google Map

The second annual Great Balsam Bike Relay will be held in Jackson County, North Carolina on August 10, 2019. The race is unique, combining the disciplines of road biking and mountain biking. Teams of four racers will travel over dirt trails, gravel, and asphalt over the course of the race. The race route is kept a secret until check in the day before. The race brings riders from several states to experience the extreme mountain adventure known as the Balsam Bike Relay. This event is a relay, much like the popular Smoky Mountain Relay. But instead of running a course through western North Carolina’s mountains, you’ll cycle it. Teams are made up of four cyclists, ideally two mountain bikers and two road specialists. Each rider will ride two segments, one at a time, for a total of eight riding segments. Segments vary in both length and elevation profile. Mountain bikes are permitted on paved sections, but no road bikes on the trail or gravel sections. Cyclocross bikes are permitted, except for on designated single-track sections. Limited mechanical support in case of bike breakdowns will be provided, but we advise that you check out our required and recommended gear list in order to be fully prepared for the event.

You and your family can enjoy: • Face painting • Jewelry making • Throwing clay pots • Painting with flip-flops • Handprint painting our logo on canvas • Block printing • Recycled bugs • Live entertainment • Food from B & Al's Come watch demonstrations of glassblowing, blacksmithing, pottery, printing, gem cutting, torchworking and raku kiln firing. We'll have live entertainment, good food and fun! The metal forges and the glass furnaces used by the artists use renewable landfill gas from a near-by closed landfill to power them. All the artists at the festival will enjoy helping children to create their own works of art. One of the highlights of the one-day festival is the Green Energy Park 'Trash Dragon,' a gargantuan costume created and built by local artists totally out of trash. Timm Muth, Director of the Green Energy Park, said, "it's fun and educational when children can see something beautiful being created out of stuff that people throw away." The Jackson County Green Energy Park (JCGEP) utilizes clean, renewable energy resources to encourage economic development, provide environmental protection, and offer educational opportunities that together will help lead towards a more sustainable future for Western North Carolina. Located in Dillsboro, NC, JCGEP captures methane gas from the…

The 45th annual Mountain Heritage Day will be a combination old-fashioned mountain fair and showcase for Southern Appalachian music, arts, dance and song, with the atmosphere of a big family reunion. Visitors will find three stages of traditional old-time, gospel, and bluegrass music and dance, with plenty of fiddles, banjos, and clogging. Festival-goers are invited to join in workshops at the Circle Tent and participate in shape-note singing, one of the mountains’ sacred traditions. Admission and parking are free so bring your family and experience all that our rich heritage has to offer. Don't miss the Smoky Mountain Splendor Quilt Show at the Ramsey Regional Activity Center on campus, featuring 300+ quilts, displays, vendors and more. Mountain Heritage Day is recognized as one of the "Top 20" events in the Southeast for the month of September.
