We’ve created this Ultimate Guide to the Blooming Season to help you along your journey. Here’s what you’ll find: Rhododendron (March – July) – A stunning, evergreen shrub known for its brilliant blooms, Rhododendron ranges in color from pure white to deep red and purple. One of the best places to find this iconic flowering plant is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, home to a variety of Rhododendron species, including the Pinxter, Catawba and Carolina. Specifically, the Oconaluftee River Trail, Mingus Creek Trail and the Clingmans Dome Trail are popular areas to see rhododendrons in bloom during the spring and early summer. Spring has sprung in the Western North Carolina mountains, making it a fantastic time to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. One of best ways of doing just that is by attending the popular Greening Up the Mountains festival in downtown Sylva. Now in its 22nd year, this highly-anticipated annual event celebrates the arrival of spring, making it the perfect time for a spring weekend getaway.

On April 8, 2024, Jackson County, NC will experience a partial solar eclipse! Approximately 85% of the sun will be obscured in the area, with the maximum point happening at 3:08 p.m. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. The solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States and Canada. Make your lodging reservations and get ready to experience this celestial phenomenon in the NC Mountains! Solar Eclipse Safety: During an eclipse, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.

West Fork Recreational Flow Releases

This year, gear up for a spectacular display of nature’s power and engineering prowess with the High Falls Dam Release at Lake Glenville. As the dam releases whitewater into the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, witness a transformation of the serene High Falls into a formidable force, creating class IV rapids over a 5.5-mile stretch. This rare event is a must-see for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. 2024 Release Dates: April 27-28 June 8 July 6 & 27 August 10 & 24 The event is recommended for experienced boaters only due to the challenging nature of the rapids and the high flows. Duke Energy releases these flows to comply with license requirements and neither encourages nor discourages recreational use of high flows by the public. Visitors are advised to stay out of the water and enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance.
