With affordable rates and cooler mountain temps, we offer the perfect end-of-summer escape for every style of traveler.
Get in some quality family time
Start your adventure by experiencing one of our three whitewater rivers, which offer rapids and rafting runs ranging from Class I to Class IV. With qualified outfitters like Smoky Mountain River Adventures, Tuckaseegee Outfitters and Dillsboro River Company, your family will be out on the water enjoying a safe and fun adventure in no time.
Jackson County is also filled with dozens of cascading waterfalls that make for the perfect vacay photos. Visit one of the highest waterfalls east of the Rockies, Whitewater Falls, the picturesque Bridal Veil Falls or the easily accessible, but stunning, Silver Run Falls, where you can even enjoy a cool dip in the natural swimming pool.
Throughout our area of the Western North Carolina mountains, you’ll find miles of hiking trails geared to fit all skill levels. Hit the trails for a scenic outdoor adventure or
pack a picnic and make a fun day out of your time in nature. With wildlife, waterfalls, and outstanding views, our trails will reward you at every turn.
Check something off the bucket list
There is still time to check a personal accomplishment off the list this summer. On Aug. 10, The Great Balsam Bike Relay combines the best of road biking and mountain biking along a course comprised of dirt trails, gravel and asphalt. This race is unique because the route is kept secret until the day before the race. The event requires teams made up of four cyclists, so gather your friends and start training.
Prepare for a paddle experience like no other when the Lake Glenville Dam releases whitewater into the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, creating class IV rapids over a 5.5-mile stretch. Taking place on both July 27 and Aug. 10, this event is one of the best adventures available in Jackson County and is perfect for adrenaline junkies.
Grab the girls for a getaway
Before jobs and school activities fill up schedules, grab your girlfriends and make your way up to the mountains. Start your trip with a day of pampering at some of the area’s best spas, including Fusions Spa & Wellness, Moonlight Spa & Retreat, Canyon Spa and Mandara Spa. Each spa offers an array of body and facial treatments, therapies and products, all promoting wellness and relaxation. After all, a vacation is not truly a vacation without some me-time in the mix.
Enjoy a day of water activities, some R&R and catching some rays on one of our crystal-clear mountain lakes. The county’s beautiful Lake Glenville is one of the highest-elevation lakes east of the Rocky Mountains, and is also home to three waterfalls. Stop by Signal Ridge Marina or Lakeshore Marina & Sea-Doo Rentals to rent kayaks, pontoon boats, or paddle boards for exploring.
Sharing a great meal is another wonderful way to spend time with your gal pals. Jackson County has plenty of fabulous restaurants throughout the county that offer a variety of cuisines and atmospheres.
Regardless of how you fill your days, remember to take time to relax and enjoy the gorgeous sunsets as they creep behind the mountains to close out your day.
Find time to fish
For those who fancy themselves as anglers, our lakes and streams offer numerous quality fishing spots, in fact, the best in N.C.! In addition to being the North Carolina Trout Capital, we are also home to the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail, which maps out 15 perfect spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout.
You can also head out on one of our local lakes to reel in a prized catch, particularly largemouth bass. In fact, Lake Glenville, the largest lake in Jackson County, has earned a reputation as a bass fisherman’s delight. Wolf Creek Lake encompasses 183 acres surrounded by spectacular scenery and remains a popular choice for fishing. Balsam Lake offers accessible fishing piers along the lakeside trail. The county also has plenty of outfitters available to take you out on a personalized fishing excursion.
