The Great Balsam Bike Relay
August 11 - August 12$100 - $200
The Great Balsam Bike Relay will be held in Jackson County, North Carolina August 11, 2018. The race is unique, combining both the disciplines of road biking and mountain biking, and throwing in one section of canoe paddling for a twist and a chance to cool off.
This event is a relay, much like the popular Smoky Mountain Relay. But instead of running the course, you’ll cycle it. Teams are made up of four cyclists, ideally two mountain bikers and two road specialists. Each rider will ride two segments, one at a time, for a total of 8 riding segments. Segments vary in both length and elevation profile. Two team members will additionally complete a single canoeing segment around the middle of the race. Riding will take place on dirt, gravel, and pavement. Cyclocross bikes are not allowed on the mountain sections, but are allowed on road sections. Limited SAG support will be provided, so we advise that you check out our required and recommended gear list in the link below.
The exact route is a secret until race check-in on August 10, 2018. At that time, a team representative will be given maps, bibs, and cue sheets with detailed directions and elevation profiles for each race segment. Teams will need to start strategizing right away for how how to attack the course.
As part of your registration, we will provide watercraft, PFDs, helmets, and paddles for the canoeing segment. You provide all of your own cycling gear.
